The Steinkimmen transmitter is a basic network transmitter of the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR) near Steinkimmen , a district of Ganderkesee . The transmitter is used to broadcast radio programs on ultra-short waves as well as digital television in the DVB-T2 HD standard .

history

The new lattice mast is in place at the topping-out ceremony on July 29, 2016. The topping-out tree can be seen on the first platform from below (60 m high).

On August 6, 1956, today's landmark of Steinkimmen went on air for the first time for what was then the only television program in West Germany (now Das Erste ). A 298 m high guyed tubular steel mast served as the transmission mast, which at the time of its construction in 1956 was the tallest structure in the Federal Republic . Via the basic network transmitter Steinkimmen, the North German Broadcasting Service supplied the Bremen / Oldenburg area with television in the so-called VHF band . Even then, the tubular mast with a diameter of two meters and a height of 267 meters was visible from afar. There was also a grid attachment of 31 meters. With a total height of 298 meters, the Steinkimmen transmitter was only two meters less than the 300-meter-high Paris Eiffel Tower . At the time, the mast was not only the tallest structure in the Federal Republic, but also the fourth tallest in Europe . The system was only in operation for five hours a day, because at that time TV programs were only available from 4:30 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. and from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. A test image was then broadcast until midnight and the transmitter was then switched off overnight. In September 1956 the first radio programs were broadcast.

Until the end of the 1980s, the ARD program was broadcast in VHF band I on channel 2. However, the television station was not suitable for color television , and a changeover appeared too expensive in view of the susceptibility of this frequency range to interference, so the decision was made to install a new transmitter system and to switch to channel 55 in UHF band V. Due to the massively shorter range of this frequency in the decimeter wave range , new filling transmitters had to be installed in the peripheral areas .

More than 50 years later, the NDR station Steinkimmen now transmits television signals and some of the radio programs digitally. All five receivable in Lower Saxony radio NDR, two commercial radio stations, a digital radio offer in the DAB - Standard includes (Digital Audio Broadcasting), the more programs and six broadcast in digital terrestrial television DVB-T sent from Steinkimmen out. Over the course of 50 years, the entire technology has been renewed, sometimes even several times. None of the original antennas are still emitting signals and none of the transmitters from 1956 are still in operation. The part that can be seen from afar, the red and white guyed transmission mast as an antenna carrier, has been preserved.

Demolition of the old mast and new construction

On January 17, 2013, the NDR announced that the previous 298-meter-high tubular mast would be replaced by a new, 285-meter-high lattice mast by 2015. After the completion of the new mast, the old mast will be gradually removed. Reasons include increased static and constructional requirements for transmitter masts that the old mast would not meet. Since renovating the old transmission mast would be too costly, it was decided to build a new one. The first lattice mast element of the new transmission mast was erected on April 4, 2016. The topping-out ceremony was officially celebrated on July 29, 2016 after the last two mast segments made of GRP pipe had been erected by helicopter the day before. In May 2017, the programs were switched to the new mast and the old tower was dismantled piece by piece by November 2017.
