The Buchen transmitter is a transmitter of the Südwestrundfunk (formerly the Süddeutscher Rundfunk ), which is located on Walldürner Straße on the northern outskirts of Buchen (Odenwald) .
The original medium wave transmitter consisted of a 53.9 m high self-radiating transmission mast . It was built in 1951 as a filling transmitter for medium wave and has been broadcasting the SDR 1 program on the frequency 998 kHz with an ERP of 200 W since the 1960s . In 1978, as part of the Geneva Wave Plan , the frequency 1413 kHz was switched to the same wave with the Bad Mergentheim and Heidenheim locations, and in the late 80s there was another change to the common wave 1485 kHz. In 1993 the medium wave transmitter was shut down.
In addition, the transmitter mast serves as a support structure for filling transmitters mounted on it for VHF radio and formerly analog television.
Since 2018, the old 53.9 meter high transmission mast from 1951 has been replaced by a new 50 meter high steel lattice tower, which, together with a tube attachment, is to reach a height of 58 meters. The old transmission mast is to be dismantled after the new transmission tower has been completed.

The 107.5 MHz frequency was initially intended for Radio Regenbogen and was to be broadcast by the Reisenbach telecommunications tower , but the then Süddeutsche Rundfunk successfully sued the frequency allocation and has been using this frequency for SWR4 since then. Since the signal on this frequency is emitted with significantly greater power than on the other frequencies, the VHF transmitting antenna was renewed and the top guy guying was reinforced by replacing the steel cables on this level, which are divided by insulators, with continuous steel cables.
Digital radio (DAB +)
The digital package of Südwestrundfunk has been broadcast by the Buchen broadcaster since April 16, 2019 . DAB + is broadcast in vertical polarization and in single- frequency mode (SFN) with other transmitters.
