The Hohe Bogen (often outdated also Hohenbogen ) is an approximately 8 km long mountain range in the Bavarian Forest .

It is located in the Upper Palatinate in the Cham district in almost equal parts in the municipal areas of the municipalities of Neukirchen b. Hl. Blut , Rimbach and Eschlkam between Furth im Wald and Bad Kötzting . Seen from northwest to southeast, its area includes the peaks Burgstall (976 m), Bärenriegel (1017 m), Eckstein (1073 m), Schwarzriegel (1079 m) and Ahornriegel (1050 m). A transmitter is installed at the Burgstall and a former air force telecommunications tower at Schwarzriegel .

There is a ski area on the northern slopes of the Ahornriegel. A double chairlift with a length of 1.36 km overcomes an altitude difference of 393 m in 15 minutes and leads to the summit.

Mountain name

According to research by the local researcher Ludwig Baumann from Bad Kötzting, the mountain name "Hoher Bogen" does not come from the morphological and landscape form of a "high arch", as is often assumed, but from the Counts of Bogen , who built a castle on the castle stables around 1190 have built (today's location of the BR transmitter). The builder, Albert III. von Bogen , was exiled in 1193, so the remote castle probably remained unfinished and fell into disrepair. The remains of a moat are still preserved. Accordingly, the name "Hohenbogen" is to be understood as the higher-lying castle of the Bogeners (in contrast to the lower castle at Bogen). A parallel development of the name can be found in " Hohenstaufen " (high seat of the Staufer), " Hohenschwangau " (Welfen) and " Hohenzollern ". In 1242 the Hohe Bogen fell to the Wittelsbach family .

geography

Apart from the lower south-western slopes, the Hohe Bogen has a special geological position in the Bavarian Forest. It forms the southern end of a gabbro amphibolite massif in the immediate vicinity of the Bohemian Massif , with the gabbros being almost completely converted into amphibolites .

The low seepage capacity of the subsoil allows hundreds of small springs and stream channels to develop on the flanks of the Hohe Bogen. To the north these flow to the Kaltenbach (Freybach) ; the southern drains are collected by the White Rain as receiving waters .

Until 1991 the German Meteorological Service operated a precipitation measuring station on the mountain at an altitude of 903 meters, which determined an average annual total of 1051 millimeters from 1931 to 1960. The average snow cover height from September to May is 46.8 centimeters.

In addition to 922 hectares of state forest , which is managed by the Bavarian State Forests (Forstbetrieb Roding), there is around twice as much private forest in the Hohen Bogen area, especially in the lower layers, with an average property size of 2 to 3 hectares.

Most of the forest cover consists of spruce forests, but especially in the state forest there are also extensive beech forests and mixed beech forests. The liverwort and the spring pea are only found here in the Upper Bavarian Forest.

Reconnaissance tower

Telecommunications tower at the Hohen Bogen

An equally befindlicher here NATO - listening post , called the telecommunications sector F , was shut down in the year of 2004. In addition to members of the Bundeswehr, US units were stationed there until 1992 and French units until 1994. It consisted of two towers and a complex passive reception and monitoring system. Since autumn 2014, the 75 m high main tower has been provided with an externally attached steel staircase and a viewing platform at a height of 50 m and is accessible to the public as a viewing tower at certain visiting times . In the vicinity of the stairs and the viewing platform, information about the history of the location and its future use as a European meeting center is to be provided in the medium term with the help of various media. The owner of the facility is the Hoher Bogen Mountain Resort GmbH.

Sports and leisure center Hoher Bogen

There is a sports and leisure center at the foot of the Hohe Bogen. In summer it is possible to descend on the summer toboggan run from the middle station of the cable car . There is also a skate and fun park and a grass kart run. In winter, in addition to classic skiing and snowboarding, the winter toboggan run is also offered. There is also a secured show jumping hill at the top station. The facility can be used all year round.

Transmitter system high arch

Main article Sender Hoher Bogen

On the 976 m high Burgstall near Furth im Wald, Bayerischer Rundfunk operates the Hoher Bogen station. It is used to distribute FM, DAB and TV programs and as a location for directional radio antennas and mobile radio.

The treasure in the Hohe Bogen

In their book The Bavarian Forest (1846), Bernhard Grueber and Adalbert Müller describe in detail a legend about the treasure that is said to be kept in a copper brew kettle under the castle stables. If the suitable finder comes and does his job exactly, the kettle lifts itself and pours out its contents of gold and diamonds. When in 1803 or 1804 a Bohemian tour company was making music at the Burgstall, farmers came running with pickaxes and shovels, suspecting that someone had lifted the treasure.
