Southern Bavaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Southern Bavaria is the part of the State of Bavaria that lies south of the Danube , in contrast to Northern Bavaria .

If you follow the current administrative structure of Bavaria, the three districts of Upper Bavaria , Lower Bavaria and Swabia are to be understood under Southern Bavaria , even if their northern borders differ from the course of the Danube.

Differentiation from old Bavaria

While southern Bavaria is a geographically defined region, old Bavaria is a culturally defined region. Old Bavaria includes those areas of Bavaria in which Bavarian dialects are spoken, in contrast to the areas in which East Franconian or Swabian dialects are spoken.

If you follow the administrative structure of Bavaria, the three districts of Upper Bavaria , Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate are to be understood under Altbayern , although here too the dialect boundaries do not exactly match the district boundaries .

The Bayerische Rundfunk used in its regional television programs Schwaben & Old Bavaria and Franken show a mixture of both definitions.

Important cities

Important cities in southern Bavaria are Munich , Augsburg , Ingolstadt , Landshut , Kempten , Rosenheim , Freising , Straubing , Neu-Ulm and Passau .

Others

In 1805 , Tyrol , which had fallen to the Electorate of Bavaria in the course of the Napoleonic Wars , was referred to as southern Bavaria . After Tyrol returned to Austria in 1814, this designation was obsolete.
