Steel house

The steel house is an experimental Bauhaus building. It is located in Dessau-Roßlau in the Bauhaus housing estate Dessau- Törten at Südstraße 5.

The steel house was built in 1926/1927 and was a joint effort by Richard Paulick and the Bauhaus master Georg Muche .

The two builders wanted to continue the rationalization efforts of Walter Gropius (prefabrication of concrete parts) by using prefabricated steel plates in the dry assembly process.

The building with almost 90 m² of living space stands on a concrete floor slab and consists of a steel frame construction. This construction was planked with 3 mm thick sheet steel. The steel sheet is insulated on the inside. It consists of two cubes of different sizes pushed together so that there are different room heights. The ceilings of the living room and one of the bedrooms are higher than in the lower rooms, in which the doors and windows are room-high. The color scheme is gray, white and black.

The steel house was completely renovated in 1993 and belongs to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation .
