Robert Diedrichs (born April 20, 1923 in Wesel , † April 25, 1995 in Chemnitz ) was a German graphic artist , painter and illustrator .

Life

Robert Diedrichs grew up in simple family circumstances in the Lower Rhine region . After graduating from school, he worked as a laborer. He took part in World War II as a fighter pilot. After the war he worked again as a laborer and later qualified as a new teacher , with drawing as his main subject. From 1948 to 1953 Diedrichs studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts with Erich Fraaß , Hans Theo Richter , Josef Hegenbarth ; He completed his diploma as a graphic designer with Max Schwimmer . With Hegenbarth he was still in contact by letter until 1957, who accompanied him as a critic in his work. From 1953 to 1955 Diedrichs was a press draftsman for the Karl-Marx-Städter "Volksstimme" and from 1955 to 1995 he worked as a freelance graphic artist in the then Karl-Marx-Stadt , where hundreds of pen drawings , etchings , Woodcuts as well as acrylic paintings and book illustrations were created. The focus of his work was on the objective area, above all he devoted himself to the representation of humans and animals. He particularly knew how to capture the type of an interesting figure and how to convincingly depict the essence of the scene with just a few strokes. Since 1955 Diedrichs was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , later a member of the section management and from 1977 first deputy of the section head of the painters and graphic artists of the district organization.

With the Karl-Marx-Städter “Volksstimme”, the forerunner of the “ Free Press ”, his work on the “Weather Frog” was particularly well known. In addition to Berthold Lindner , Diedrichs was involved in the creation of the stamps for the 30th International Peace Trip in 1977 and, with Manfred König, in the collation for 25 years of working-class combat groups in 1978. In 1964/1965 he designed the lead inlays in collaboration with the Karl-Marx-Städter artists Johannes Belz , Rudolf Fleischer and Rudolf Kraus , which can still be seen in Chemnitzer Brückenstraße today. Diedrichs illustrated nine published books and other literary sources, including those by Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol , Heinrich Mann and Maxim Gorki . He designed the cycle for the Georg Weerth School and the Clara Zetkin cycle, for which he was honored with an art prize, and other graphic cycles, such as the one for Fritz Heckert's 100th birthday in 1984. He also designed many areas with his works of public life, like NVA barracks. In 1975 the triptych "Brotherhood of Arms" (acrylic paints) was created, in 1976 a colored graphic board for a Lenin word for the Karl-Marx-Stadt military district command and in 1977 a triptych "Border officers - training / service / family" for the officers' college "Rosa Luxemburg" in Plauen, as well as other plants in various companies and combines . A diptych was also created in 1987 about the liberation of Chemnitz in 1945, which was in the town hall of Karl-Marx-Stadt until the fall of the Wall . In 1973 he went on a study trip to Siberia .
