Order "Activist of Socialist Work"
Activist order with interim clasp for double distinction

Activist of socialist work was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of an order. It was donated on July 28, 1969 and replaced the awards previously given to the activist of the seven-year plan , its predecessor an activist of the five-year plan and a medal for excellent performance . There were also honorary degrees for young activists as well as outstanding young activists , which were awarded by the FDJ and the FDGB to young people in school or training for the required level of commitment and performance.

Definition of terms

The term activist was defined for the prevailing social order as a worker who goes beyond the norms and requirements or provides otherwise exemplary services

The activist movement was taken over from the Stakhanov movement in the Soviet Union .

Award requirement

The honorary title could also be awarded repeatedly to all working people in all areas of business and social life. The only prerequisite was that the entrusted person had achieved excellent results in building socialism and in consolidating and strengthening the GDR. This affected the simplest things up to the application of new working methods or over-plan fulfillment in production. The award as an activist of socialist work was evaluated and perceived differently. It was spread relatively broadly in order to demonstrate the broad consent of the working people with the system. In 1988, out of 8,979,700 working people (p. 111), 4,441 were honored as merited activists and 284,166 as activists (p. 133).

Appearance

The bronze-colored, upside-down square with rounded corners, had an edge length of 25 mm and showed on its obverse a red enameled or lacquered granular center field with an attached hammer and compass. One ear each to the left and right of it. The lapel shows the inscription:

WORK

In 1969 the medal was awarded with a bronze clasp, which was also enamelled with red grain. From 1970 on with the GDR's national coat of arms. If it was awarded several times, a two, three or four-fold miniature clasp was awarded. These showed the bronze clasp with the national coat of arms on top.
