The Klaffenbach moated castle in the Klaffenbach district of the city of Chemnitz in the Free State of Saxony , not far from the Würschnitz , was formerly known as Neukirchen Castle . It was built in the 16th century and provides an almost unique for Saxony example of a moated castle of the Renaissance represents.

history

In 1543, the wealthy Annaberg mint master Wolf Hünerkopf bought Burkhardtsdorf as well as Neukirchen and Klaffenbach from Elector Johann Friedrich I of Saxony and had the castle built on their corridor borders between 1555 and 1560.

Geographically, the castle is located between the towns of Neukirchen and Klaffenbach and was previously not part of these two towns, as it was a property to whose rule both towns belonged. The castle and the adjoining manor were owned by the barons, Count von Taube since 1667 . They had tried in vain to acquire town charter for their castle and property.

The castle fell into bourgeois hands when a Schneeberg merchant bought it in 1819. The Klaffenbach community had owned the manor since 1926, and from 1934 also the castle. The community used the palace complex from 1935 for the Reich Labor Service and from 1947 to 1989 as a youth work center for girls. At that time the site fell into disrepair. Between 1991 and 1995 it was extensively renovated with the help of European funding. For several years now, concerts of various musical styles have been held in the castle on a regular basis. During the flood of the century in 2002 and the Würschnitz flood in August 2010 , the buildings were largely under water.

Name change

In 1926 the land of the manor (and in 1934 also the castle) Neukirchen was bought by the municipality of Klaffenbach from the previous owner, the municipality of Neukirchen . At the same time (1934) or later the name was changed from "Schloss Neukirchen" to "Schloss Klaffenbach". The historically correct name is still Schloss Neukirchen, as it is a proper name that has evolved over time . This is why historical literature still names the castle that way today.

Green Salon

The four-storey castle building, to which a stone bridge leads, is surrounded by a moat. Striking architectural elements are the curved gable, the keel-arched roof and the square shape of the building. In addition to the castle information center, smaller event rooms and the gallery café, the ground floor offers a small chapel . This received a groin vault and ceiling paintings in 1860 , it is used as a wedding hall. There is a large relief of the coat of arms by Dietrich von Taube from 1616, which once adorned the entrance area.

In the conference and exhibition hall on the first floor there are classicist wall paintings; this room is also called the Green Salon . Dietrich von Taube had the second floor extended in the 17th century. The half-timbered walls and the ornamentally designed ceiling are impressive. The top floor was initially a warehouse; since the 21st century the room has been a citizen's hall and is equipped with a cabaret.

The outbuildings enclose the main building in a U-shape. There is a lace room, a silversmith, a candle shop and a hotel with an adjoining restaurant. From 1995 to 2008 the Museum for Saxon Vehicles , which has been located in the historic Stern-Garagen multi -storey car park in Chemnitz since 2009 , was based here. The Chemnitz Golf Club & Co. KG is now located in the former museum rooms .
