Wolf Durian (actually Wolfgang Walter Bechtle , born October 19, 1892 in Stuttgart , † November 8, 1969 in Berlin ) was a German journalist, translator and author of books for young people.

Life

After graduating from high school, Wolf Durian traveled to America and worked as a dishwasher, woodcutter, gardener, cowboy and mail rider. Then he studied German and zoology. In the early 1920s he was editor of the popular science magazine Kosmos in Stuttgart, then from 1924 in Berlin editor-in-chief of the children's magazine Der hehre Fridolin , a bi-monthly publication for "Sport, Games, Fun and Adventure", which was published from 1921 to 1928 by Ullstein Verlag .

After 1945 Durian lived in the Soviet occupation zone in Berlin-Weißensee and worked for the Tälichen Rundschau and the Berliner Zeitung , where he wrote in the features section under the pseudonym Fridolin .

He has written numerous books for children and young people, which have been translated into several languages and which have his love for nature, animals and foreign countries as their content. Probably his greatest success was the youth book Kai aus der Kiste , published in 1926 , which has seen numerous editions to this day. It had previously appeared in 1924 as a serial for the magazine Der hehre Fridolin . In 1927 the Examination Board of the Jugendschriftenwarte rejected the book because of Americanism . Under Nazi rule, it was banned for the same reason (pro-American). It was filmed under the same title and also appeared as a radio play.
