Gerhard Lahr

Gerhard Lahr (born January 11, 1938 in Reichenbach , Vogtland , † November 23, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German illustrator.

Life

Gerhard Lahr attended the Weinholdschule in Reichenbach from 1944 to 1952 and then completed a two-year apprenticeship as a poster and lettering painter (commercial advertiser) in the department store on Graben in Reichenbach. From 1956 to 1959 he studied commercial graphics at the Fachschule für Angewandte Kunst Magdeburg (the former arts and crafts school Magdeburg ), a. a. with the typographer Karl-Heinz Lange and the commercial artist Karl-Heinz Leue. After a temporary job at the German advertising agency in Dessau, u. a. Together with Rolf Händler , he began studying at the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig in 1962 , which he broke off. From 1963 he lived freelance in East Berlin, where he belonged to the circle of artists around the sculptor Werner Stötzer , with whom he also drew together. Lahr was one of the best-known and most important illustrators of his generation in eastern Germany in the field of children's and youth books. His work includes over 150 children's, youth and school books.
