Rolf Händler (* 1938 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German painter who studied at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art and is in the tradition of the Berlin School of Painting.

life and work

Born in Halle / Saale in 1938, Rolf Händler began an apprenticeship as a retoucher in the graphic art institute and cliché factory in Halle in 1952, before starting his first degree in commercial graphics at the University of Applied Arts in Magdeburg in 1956, which he graduated with an exam in 1959.

After temporarily working at the German advertising agency in Dessau (with Gerhard Lahr, among others ), he studied painting again at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art from 1961 to 1966 . He then completed a master class at the Academy of Arts (Berlin) with Karl Erich Müller . Rolf Händler has been working as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Berlin since 1972.

Handel's painterly work encompasses all classical genres, but portraits and still lifes are of particular importance . In his portraits, the shadowy bodies almost seem to dissolve in the pictorial space, the figures often look directly at the viewer, perspective seems to be completely eliminated. In terms of content, the still lifes detach themselves from the vanitas motif; they are more about the sensual wealth of everyday objects. Another complex of themes in his oeuvre is the landscape, which ranges from extensive landscape panoramas to intimate pictures of gardens and travel.

In terms of style, Händler follows an impressive, very painterly approach to the image. Since he found his own handwriting early on, his work is characterized by a remarkable persistence. The impasto application of paint and the lively brushwork, which give the pictures a great dynamic, are striking . Thanks to his exuberant, vibrating style of painting, his pictures sometimes seem distant and approach abstraction. Handel's reduced color palette is also characteristic, which changes primarily between green, brown and ocher tones and creates a delicate, melancholy mood.
