The Manx2 flight 7100 crashed on February 10, 2011 while landing at Cork Airport . 6 of the 12 occupants, including the two pilots, died, the other 6 were injured, some seriously. The plane was destroyed.

Course of events

The flight took off from 08:10 in Belfast . The weather conditions in Cork were poor during the approach, landing at other airports was considered. After the weather in Cork had improved a bit, a landing was finally attempted there. Two approach attempts failed. After the aircraft was already below the decision height on the third attempt at about 0950, the crew tried to take off. The machine rolled first to the left and then to the right; the right wing touched the ground, which led to the crash.

causes

The cause of the crash was determined to be loss of control during the attempted go- around below the decision height under instrument flight conditions (IMC) . One of the contributing factors was that the machine's two engines had been providing different thrust for a long time. This can lead to problems, especially at low speeds. In addition, the copilot, as the pilot flying , actually had to control the thrust regulation of the engines, but for unknown reasons the captain took over this task while the copilot was controlling the aircraft, which led to uncoordinated control interventions in the thrust regulation and aircraft control. The landing approach, which was in any case inadmissible due to the visibility, was also continued below the decision height instead of being canceled. Due to a pilot's error, one of the engines was switched to partial reverse thrust , causing the aircraft to roll to the right.

The accident report describes a network of corporate relationships that cannot be reliably monitored by the responsible authorities. Manx2 limited itself to the sale of tickets and called itself a "Marketing Group". However, it did not make this clear in public. It was also not involved in certain security-relevant processes of the corporate network. The aircraft was leased from the Spanish Eurocontinental Air to the Spanish airline Flightline and operated by them; this in turn had commissioned another company in Spain to maintain the machine. For the flight number code that of another, uninvolved company was used. In addition to the stress caused by numerous other tasks in addition to controlling the aircraft, the pilots had not observed the prescribed rest times. They had also apparently been urged by the airline not to switch to another airport if possible.

As a result, Manx2 ceased operations and was transferred to Citywing in 2013 .

A cinematic reconstruction of the tragedy surrounding Manx2 flight 7100 can be seen in the series Mayday - Alarm im Cockpit in Season 14 under the title "Fatal Chain of Errors".
