Johannes Belz
Johannes Belz , also Johann Belz or Hannes Belz , (born January 28, 1925 in Kratzig , † March 4, 1976 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) was a German sculptor.
Life
Johannes Belz was born in Kratzig in the district of Köslin , where he completed an apprenticeship in agriculture and later worked as a farm worker. He was then a soldier until 1945 and suffered a serious wound. After fleeing from his homeland, he worked as a wood carver in Klingenthal from 1946 to 1951 and then until 1953 as an advertising painter for the SDAG Wismut . From 1953 to 1958 he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in the field of sculpture under Walter Arnold . From 1959 to 1964 he was a lecturer at the technical college for applied arts in Schneeberg . In the following years he worked as a freelancer in Karl-Marx-Stadt until his death in 1976. During these years he created numerous works for public spaces. Belz was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and from 1962 a member of the board and from 1968 head of the sculptors section of the district association. Since 1970 he was also a member of the central board of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and the Advisory Board for Visual Arts at the City Council of Karl-Marx-Stadt.
The sculptor Erik Neukirchner (* 1972) is his grandson.
