Technical school for applied arts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Technical schools for applied arts were technical schools in the GDR for training in the field of artistic design .

The training period was three years each. In addition to the general technical school requirements, special artistic aptitude was required for admission to the course. This was checked by submitting artistic works and an aptitude test lasting several days. The degree also entitles the holder to take up a university or college degree. As a rule, the graduates found their place in industry and arts and crafts as designers of industrial shapes, toys, ceramics and jewelry, or as sculptors, interior designers or graphic designers. Few became freelance artists. They were not directly accepted into the GDR artists' association , as was the rule with the graduates of the art schools. Membership in this association was (with a few exceptions) the basic requirement for freelance work as a visual or applied artist in the GDR. In the period from 1951 to 1990 there were “technical schools for applied arts” in Erfurt , Heiligendamm , Leipzig , Magdeburg , Potsdam , Schneeberg and Sonneberg . There were also technical college courses in artistic design at various universities. In the unified Germany, the qualification of the technical schools for applied arts after at least three years of practical experience was equated with the diploma of a technical college.
