The Johannes R. Becher Medal was awarded by the Kulturbund of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) for services “to the development of socialist national culture ”.

The medal is made of bronze , has a diameter of four centimeters and shows a portrait of the poet and politician Johannes R. Becher . It has been awarded to individuals and collectives since 1961 for achievements primarily in the fields of art and culture, but also sports and leisure. The Johannes R. Becher Medal was differentiated into the three grades of bronze, silver and gold.

The first winner was Anna Seghers . Other well-known award winners include Annemarie Auer , Erich Arendt , Helmut Baierl , Theo Balden , Walter Basan , Karl Czok , Fritz Duda , Konstantin Fedin , Harry Hindemith , Günter Hofé , Heinz Kahlau , Inge Keller , Dieter Noll , Karl-Erich Müller , Richard Paulick , Hans Pischner , Herbert Sandberg , Bernhard Seeger , Gerhard Thieme , Curt Trepte , Hedwig Voegt and Ehm Welk .
