Walter Basan

Walter Basan (born August 10, 1920 in Beyendorf , today a district of Magdeburg ; † February 14, 1999 in Magdeburg) was a German writer and radio play author.

Life

Walter Basan completed a commercial apprenticeship after 1937 and then worked in the chemical industry. From 1945 to 1999, Walter Basan worked as a freelance writer in Magdeburg and in 1946 was a co-founder of the Kulturbund and its literature working group in Halle . In 1953, after the workers' uprising in the GDR , he left the SED and was observed by the Ministry for State Security after 1962 . In the years 1955–59 and from 1973 Basan was a member of the district board of the Writers' Association in the Magdeburg district.

In addition to historical and contemporary novels, short stories and popular science books for young people, Basan also wrote radio plays. Since the 1970s he has devoted himself increasingly to environmental problems, including in his journalistic books, including in his children's books Brisebraus and the green wonder (1972) and Come back, Hajji-Laklak. A Stork Story from Oberwallmenach (1985).

Walter Basan was awarded the Johannes R. Becher Medal of the Kulturbund and the GDR Medal of Merit. Part of his estate is in the Saxony-Anhalt Literature Office .
