Christmas (block number 17)

The postage stamp year 1978 of the Deutsche Bundespost comprised 34 special stamps , four of which were only available as a stamp block. This year nine definitive stamps from the Castles and Palaces and Industry and Technology series were issued.

All postage stamps issued since January 1, 1969 had unlimited postage validity and there was no expiration date as in previous years. With the introduction of the euro as a common European currency on January 1, 2002, this regulation became obsolete. However, the stamps of this year could be used until June 30, 2002. An exchange was possible until September 30th in the branches of the Deutsche Post , after that until June 30th, 2003 centrally in the Philately branch of Deutsche Post AG in Frankfurt.

Specialty

Originally, the Deutsche Bundespost did not intend to issue any more blocks after the issue of block 17, because the relatively large area repeatedly led to operational problems with the automatic mail set-up and stamping. However, this was only maintained until 1982, with the blocks issued afterwards for many years, either in terms of size and / or postage value, being unsuitable for disrupting the machine letter preparation and processing, as they were not suitable for standard letters.

The 70 + 35 Pfennig sports brand came under massive speculative influence in the early 1980s, as its circulation fell below the “magic limit” of five million copies for the first time in many years. The retail value of the brand quintupled within two years, only to drop again significantly.

Individual evidence

  1. There were few exceptions, however; the definitive stamp series German Buildings from Twelve Centuries , the Brandenburg Gate and the special stamps in honor of the 1968 Summer Olympics in the city of Mexico were valid without restriction. These stamps were issued before 1969.
  2. Changeover of stamps from DM to € ( Memento of October 6, 2013 in the Internet Archive )
  3. BGH, October 11, 2005 - XI ZR 395/04. Legal character and validity of postage stamps
  4. Postage stamps Spiegel 11/1978 u. a.
  5. Michel catalogs for the years 1981 to 1985.
  6. a b These stamps were only issued as a stamp pad.
  7. The stamps were printed together, but they could also be purchased individually (order 40/50/40/50 etc.).
  8. The same stamps with the inscription "Berlin" were issued on the same day by the Landespostdirektion Berlin.
  9. ↑ In 1979 a 90-Pfennig value was expected to be issued, but this did not happen. The Michel numbers Bund 991 and Berlin 583 were kept free and were never reassigned in order not to have to change all subsequent numbers. In contrast, a 90 Pf value was issued in the series Castles and Palaces on January 11, 1979 ( Mi. -Nr. 588, 997 ).
  10. First Day 21/1978.
  11. a b first day sheet 14/1979.
  12. The same motif was issued in 1982 with a face value of 190 pfennigs.
  13. a b c Although the postage stamps with the face values of 150, 180 and 230 Pfennig were only issued in 1979, they belong to the set issued in 1978 and are therefore among the stamps of 1978.
  14. First day sheet 10/1979.
  15. The same motif was issued in 1982 with a face value of 250 Pfennig.
  16. The same stamps with the inscription "Berlin" were issued on the same day by the Landespostdirektion Berlin; only the issue for 20 Pfennig was issued in Berlin on April 14, 1977.
  17. a b c d Although the stamps with the face value of 20, 25, 90 and 210 Pfennig were only issued in 1979, they are part of the set issued in 1978 and are therefore among the stamps of 1978.
