People who were depicted on a postage stamp of the Federal Republic of Germany during their lifetime

First postage stamp of the Federal Republic of Germany that does not show a German head of state, but the first honorary citizen of Europe, Jean Monnet .

This list gives an overview of those people who were depicted on a postage stamp of the Federal Republic of Germany during their lifetime .

In Germany, with the exception of the head of state, no living personalities are usually depicted on postage stamps. This is traditionally based and not based on a law.

“As in many countries, it is also customary in Germany to have the stamps bearing the image of the respective head of state. This is not intended to honor the person or life's work of the person depicted, but only to represent the issuing country in a documentary way. In all other cases, the Deutsche Bundespost refuses to depict living people on postage stamps because their life's work is not yet completed. "

- Press releases of the Federal Ministry for the Post and Telecommunications : The new postage stamp series of the Deutsche Bundespost, No. 2/1960 - Sheet 4

There are more German postage stamps that depict living people, but these are symbolic of a corresponding event. Usually these people are alienated by wiping and pixel effects, or they can only be seen from behind.

Exceptions in the Federal Republic of Germany

The first exception was in February 1977, when the French politician and statesman Jean Monnet was made an honorary citizen of Europe .

The first such postage stamp in reunified Germany was issued on April 12, 2007 on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI.

The CSU politician Ernst Hinsken tried to get an exemption from the responsible Ministry of Finance under the direction of Peer Steinbrück and later under Wolfgang Schäuble for a special stamp in honor of Helmut Kohl (the 80th birthday was planned in April 2010) during his lifetime. This proposal was rejected by both ministers and Chancellor Angela Merkel . On November 16, 2010, at the request of the Junge Union Ludwigshafen in Karlsruhe, the federal party congress of the CDU passed the resolution that Kohl should be honored with a stamp as an honorary citizen of Europe for his “outstanding political life achievement”. In mid-January 2011 it was confirmed that there would be a stamp in honor of Kohl that same year. Merkel and Schäuble even welcomed this now. Since finding a motif turned out to be more difficult than expected, there was no corresponding brand in 2011. At first it looked as if there would also be no special stamp for cabbage for the 2012 vintage. The Ministry of Finance only updated its overview for the current year at the end of May 2012 and now provided for a 55-cent special stamp with Kohl as Chancellor of Unity - Honorary Citizen of Europe for October 11, 2012 . The brand was presented on September 27, 2012 and went on sale on October 11, 2012.

Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany

In Germany, it is a tradition that the head of state, currently the Federal President , has the right to have his or her portrait shown on a postage stamp (regardless of whether it is a special or definitive stamp).

The first Federal President Theodor Heuss even got two permanent series (→ Heuss series and Heuss medallion ).

His successor Heinrich Lübke decided not to be shown in a permanent series, but was honored with two stamps each on the occasion of his election or re-election.

He was succeeded in the office of Federal President Gustav Heinemann , who in turn was represented ( Heinemann series ).

None of the Federal Presidents who followed Heinemann made use of the rights granted to them.

In 1982 a block of stamps was published with portraits of the previous and current Federal Presidents. In addition to Heuss, Lübke and Heinemann, these were Walter Scheel and Karl Carstens, who was in office at the time .

The following list of brands is divided into two parts. In the first section all stamps of the Deutsche Bundespost and the Deutsche Bundespost Berlin are listed. Since 1995, the official postage stamps of the Federal Republic of Germany only bear the country designation Germany, these are in the second section.
