Karl Oskar Blase (born March 24, 1925 in Cologne ; † December 27, 2016 in Kassel ) was a German painter , sculptor , graphic artist , curator and university professor who worked at the Kassel School . He is known for his numerous graphic designs of postage stamps , posters posters and logos , as well as illustrations .
Education and life
Karl Oskar Blase studied graphics and painting in Wuppertal . In 1950 he founded the müller-blase studio together with Felix Müller . From 1957 to 1968, the müller-blase studio designed the layout for the magazine " form " . Karl Oskar Blase designed almost all the covers of the magazine as art director until 1968. From 1952 to 1958, Blase was the head of the studio for the exhibitions at the America Houses in Germany. Blase was a member of the German Werkbund from 1952 . In the same year he had his first solo exhibition in the Morsbroich municipal museum in Leverkusen. In 1959, Karl Oskar Blase curated Albert Schindehuette's first exhibition in his Galerie Archiv in Kassel.
Blase exhibited in the graphics department of documenta III and documenta 8 . The documenta logo for d8 remained in his garden in Kassel. In 1968, 1972, 1977 and 1987 he designed posters, signets and catalogs for the 4th documenta , documenta 5 , documenta 6 and documenta 8. In 1972 and 1977 he shot the video documentations of documenta 5 and 6. 1991 curated he Otto Heinrich Kühner's exhibition Tuesday Pictures in Kassel.
Karl Oskar Blase was married to the interior designer Marga Blase.
Graphic artist and poster designer
Blase has designed numerous award-winning posters. From 1966 to 1978 he designed posters for Atlas film distribution . He also created the posters and the visual appearance of the Kassel State Theater . In 1967 he was a member of the design team for the German pavilion at the EXPO in Montreal . In 1997 he designed a new, contemporary logo for the city of Kassel, which replaced the shamrock that had been used since the 1960s .
Stamp designer
From 1955 to 1988 Blase designed various postage stamps for the Deutsche Bundespost . Among other things, he designed the stamp series Progress in Technology and Science . The stamp for the International Year of the Child 1979 shows a portrait of Blase's son Boris. More than 50 postage stamps were printed from many of Blase's submitted designs.
In 1988 he became a member of the art advisory board at the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications , which decided on the design of the brands to be issued. From 1992 to 1997 Blase was chairman of this art advisory board.

University professor
In 1958, Blase became a lecturer at the Werkkunstschule Kassel . He was a member of the Kassel School of Poster Art, Book and Magazine Graphics . From 1964 Blase was a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). From 1966 until his retirement in 1992, Blase was professor of art and visual communication at the Kunsthochschule Kassel . From 1976 to 1981, Blase, together with Ben Wagin , was the initiator of the Baumpate campaign - green is life in Berlin , Kassel and Basel . Blase designed the glass sculpture for the Kassel Citizen Prize Das Glas der Vernunft . In 2001, Blase created his grave complex in the artist necropolis of Kassel.
Karl Oskar Blase lived and worked in his studio in Kassel and was buried in the artist necropolis next to his deceased wife in 2018.

Karl Oskar designed posters, graphics and stamps. He was also a painter and sculptor. In his visual solutions, he assumed that commercial graphics are an inseparable part of visual communication and must therefore follow the aspects of the modern communication society. Blase was the author of numerous art theoretical texts.
