Kassel School of Poster Art, Book and Magazine Graphics
The Kassel School of Poster Art, Book and Magazine Graphics (also known as the Kassel Poster Art School ) is an artist collective of graphic designers at the Kassel Art School , whose artistic focus is on the design of posters and the illustration of books and magazines . The collective produces concrete poster art as well as book and magazine graphics. The Kassel Poster Art School is one of the classics of international graphic design.
history
Since the post-war period, professors and students have worked in the field of graphic design at the Kassel Kunsthochschule, and they have found unusual solutions to complex graphic problems. The school was founded in 1948 under the leadership of Hans Leistikow , who previously worked on the New Frankfurt project .
At the art academy in Kassel , Leistikow worked artistically with Hans Hillmann , Gunter Rambow and Jan Lenica , who were already known for their poster art, book graphics and magazine illustrations .
Art style
The style of this school is described both with "objectivity" and "clarity" as well as with "succinct severity" and "deeper meaning". The generation of artists active in the “Kassel Poster Art School” consciously detached themselves from the climate of the Adenauer era of the 1950s and developed their own visual language.
The Kassel Poster Art School provides exciting insights into the cultural history of the Federal Republic after 1945, from the Cold War to the nuclear power debate to the student revolt , from denazification , the Frankfurt squatter scene , to the rise of the Greens . The posters not only graphically get to the heart of complex issues, but also capture contemporary history with wit and imagination .
The Kassel Poster Art School created the documenta designs for the world art exhibitions of all documenta exhibitions.
