Life

Rambow trained as a glass painter in Hadamar from 1954 to 1958 . He then studied until 1964 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Kassel with Hans Hillmann , where he also met Gerhard Lienemeyer , with whom he started the studio group Rambow + Lienemeyer in Kassel (1960–1964), in Stuttgart (1964–1967) and from 1960 1967 in Frankfurt am Main .

In addition, he founded in 1967 with Lienemeyer in Frankfurt's West End vanguard carbon Kunstverlag , published in the irritating products. The two created numerous photo books and poster series on literature, theater and social issues. Authors included Peter Weibel and Valie Export ( Bildkompendium wiener Aktionismus , 1970), Günter Brus ( Irrwisch , 1971), Hans Hillmann ( I dreamed, I was a dog that dreams , 1970) and Walter E. Richartz ( literally stunned , 1969 ). The book mama & papa. materialaktion 63-69 by the Viennese actionist Otto Mühl was indexed in 1969 at the instigation of Beate Uhse , whereupon the second edition of the mama & papa book was confiscated by the Frankfurt public prosecutor. The political photo poster It's time , which was directed against the Vietnam War, became legendary .

The artistic partnership lasted until 1986 (since 1973 with Michael van de Sand as Rambow Lienemeyer van de Sand ). Until 2008, Rambow continued this work in the studio community Rambow, van de Sand . In 2009 Rambow founded the Institute for Visual Communication and runs a poster gallery in his hometown of Güstrow in the former city palace of Count von der Lühe, connected to the Edition Galerie Rambow. From 1969 to 1986 he was married to the photographer Inge Rambow .

Between 1974 and 1991 he taught as a professor for graphic design at the University of Kassel . He was a member of the Kassel School of Poster Art, Book and Magazine Graphics . From 1991 to 2003 as professor for visual communication at the State University for Design Karlsruhe (in the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe). Then he taught a. a. at two Chinese universities. This resulted in numerous book publications from study projects. At the beginning of February 2011, Rambow was appointed honorary professor by the Saar College of Fine Arts . Since the 2012/2013 season, Rambow has designed the premiere and revival posters for the Frankfurt Opera .

Rambow's poster designs have received many national and international awards. Numerous museums archive his work.
