Erich Wonder
Erich Wonder (* 1944 in Jennersdorf , Burgenland , Austria ) is an Austrian set designer .
Life
Wonder studied at the Graz Art School and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1960–1964 and then worked as a set assistant at the theater in Bremen with Wilfried Minks , then as a set designer at the Schauspiel Frankfurt .
Since 1978 he has worked as a freelance set designer with many well-known directors such as Johannes Schaaf , Luc Bondy , Christof Nel , Ruth Berghaus , Horst Zankl , Heiner Goebbels , Jürgen Flimm , Hans Neuenfels , Claus Peymann , Heiner Müller , Paulus Manker , Matthias Hartmann .
Under the impression of the cinema aesthetic, he brought industrial architecture and industrial and street lighting onto the stage. But also sophisticated interior design is his specialty. He developed great virtuosity in the use of painted grommets , which can be hung one behind the other and change their transparency through separate lighting. This means that the images float in the room and can be faded out.
In 1994 he created the set for Tristan and Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival (director: Heiner Müller). In 2000 he designed the stage sets for Jürgen Flimm's new production of the Ring des Nibelungen .
Erich Wonder is also known for his exhibitions and performances, e.g. B. Staged Spaces , 1979, Kunstverein Hamburg (with Karl-Ernst Herrmann ), Das Auge des Taifun (1992 on Vienna's Ringstrasse with Heiner Müller and the Einstürzende Neubauten , filmed by Paulus Manker ), Rosebud (1979 in the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, with Fritz Schediwy ). In 1987 he was represented at the documenta 8 in Kassel with the project Maelstromsüdpol (together with Heiner Goebbels ) .
In 1978 Erich Wonder took over a professorship at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he led the master class for stage design. From 1985 to 2012 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and headed the scenography department at the Institute for Art and Architecture (successor: Anna Viebrock ).
In 2006 he designed the trophy for the German Theater Prize Der Faust .
Some of the set designers who were trained by Erich Wonder are Raimund Bauer , Annette Murschetz , Ina Peichl , Christian Schmidt , Natascha von Steiger and Reinhard von der Thannen .
