The glass of reason

The Kassel Citizens' Prize The Glass of Reason is a political award for humanities scholars, politicians and artists who have made a special contribution to enlightenment, reason and tolerance. It was initiated on the occasion of the German reunification in 1991 by the physician Hansjörg Melchior and Bernd Behrens and donated by the citizens of Kassel . The sponsoring association of the award is the "Society of Friends and Patrons of the Kassel Citizens' Prize 'The Glass of Reason'".

The award is endowed with 10,000 euros (as of 2019). The sculpture for the prize was designed by the Kassel artist Karl Oskar Blase (* 1925, † 2016).
