America house

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

America Homes were branches of the United States Information Agency founded in the 1950s. The America Houses were supposed to bring the history of the Americans, their traditions and customs closer to the Germans, combined with a firm understanding of democracy as an orientation for a new start after the Second World War . In the course of time the institutions expanded their offerings, so that exhibitions, lecture discussions and other events were added to the original library offerings . In addition, advice on student exchanges was offered, for example. The America Houses were an integral part of American public diplomacy activities.

In the 1960s, the America houses were often the scene of anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and were subsequently protected by the police. That worsened again during the Iraq war.

In September 2007 the last German of these 57 American houses in the world was closed. At most America houses in Germany, the facilities could be continued in another form, usually as a registered association .
