The German-American Center / James F. Byrnes Institute 's (DAZ) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, bi-national cultural and educational institution in Stuttgart to promote the relations between Germany and the United States . The cultural institute, founded in 1995 as the successor to the Amerika Haus , provides information on social, political and economic issues in both countries.

The association's chairman is Rudolf Böhmler . Cultural program

The program includes lectures, seminars and discussions in German and English, musical events, films and exhibitions on politics, economics, history, art and culture. These are always closely related to the USA and are led by experts from science, journalism, media and business. The DAZ also serves as a meeting point for some German-American groups such as Let's Read !, The Empire Study Group and Transatlantic ArtConneXion, as well as clubs such as the Metropolitan Club.

Language program

English language courses are offered for adults and young people from grade 8 with different focuses. The teachers are all native speakers from the USA. The aim of these language courses is to familiarize oneself with the English language and American culture with the help of American teachers.

America Explained - DAZ for schools

The student program has developed with increasing interest in recent years. American speakers give school classes the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the USA and to talk about various aspects of politics, history and culture in the USA. Furthermore, in cooperation with u. a. The State Center for Political Education Baden-Württemberg offered teacher training courses to the Stuttgart regional council and the United States Embassy in Berlin . Library

The institute's small library has a wide range of media for readers of all ages. In addition to literature, this also includes magazines, German and English-language daily newspapers and electronic media. In addition to over 2000 books, 550 DVDs, 40 magazines and 30 board games, the library also offers free access to the eLibrary USA database.

USA information

In cooperation with EducationUSA, the DAZ also provides independent information on the subject of training and further education and stays abroad in the USA (high school, university, au pair, internship / work stay).

American Days

American Days is an American cultural festival in the Stuttgart metropolitan region . It has taken place annually since 2008 with one exception. From 2014 they will take place every two years. For 11 days, German and American institutions will present a multifaceted program on various aspects of transatlantic relations. The German-American Center / James F. Byrnes Institute eV (DAZ) presented the American Days 2008 for the first time in cooperation with the cultural office of the state capital Stuttgart and the Robert Bosch Foundation. The American Days are intended to draw attention to existing activities and the variety of transatlantic commitments in the Stuttgart region, as well as to stimulate new campaigns and collaborations related to America.

Byrnes Scholarships

For young people from the Stuttgart region, the DAZ, in cooperation with AFS Intercultural Encounters eV, Andreas Stihl AG & Co. , Daimler AG and the Stuttgart Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, offers scholarships for a school year in the USA. The scholarships are intended to interest young people in transatlantic relations and links with the Stuttgart region. Until 2016, the scholarship program ran under the name Daimler-Byrnes-Scholarship and was aimed at young people from the Stuttgart region . Since 2016 and the name change to Byrnes Scholarships, young people who live or go to school in the Stuttgart administrative district can apply .
