The United States Embassy in Vienna is the United States' diplomatic mission in Austria .

Since 1838, the United States had a diplomatic mission in Austria and Austria-Hungary . The United States was represented in Vienna by an embassy between 1902 and 1917, which was downgraded to an embassy in 1921.

Since 1947 the legation, which was given embassy status again in 1951, has been located in Boltzmanngasse in the 9th district of Alsergrund in Vienna . The current ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Austria has been Trevor Traina since 2018 .

history

The first American envoy - with the diplomatic rank of “envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary” - in Austria was Henry Augustus Philip Muhlenberg . He was appointed on February 8, 1838.

The first American ambassador - with the diplomatic rank of "extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador" - in Austria was Robert Sanderson McCormick , who was promoted from envoy to ambassador on May 27, 1902.

After the USA entered the war in World War I and diplomatic relations with Austria-Hungary were broken off in 1917, the interests of the United States were represented by Spain for the duration of the war in Vienna . The American Embassy reopened as a legation in 1921.

In 1947 the embassy moved to the former building of the Academy for Oriental Languages at Boltzmanngasse 16 in Vienna's 9th district. The building, designed by the architect Ludwig Baumann and designed in the historicist , baroque style, was originally built for the Imperial and Royal Academy for Oriental Languages and opened in 1902. The purpose of this academy, which had existed in a different location since 1754 and was founded by Empress Maria Theresa , was to improve trade relations with the Balkans and the Middle East .

After the " Anschluss " in 1938, the new National Socialist rulers severely restricted the Academy's activities. From 1941 the building was used as a military hospital for the Wehrmacht . On June 30, 1947, the building, which was now again owned by the Republic of Austria, was bought by the American government. A US embassy was housed here until 1951 . This representation has had official embassy status since 1951 .

On October 1, 2007, a 42-year-old man tried unsuccessfully to get into the building with a backpack packed with two hand grenades and nails. The suspect was later caught and acquitted in April 2008 on charges of planning an attack on the embassy.
