Trevor Dow Traina (born May 16, 1968 in San Francisco , California , USA ) is an American entrepreneur and ambassador of the United States to Austria .

Background and professional career

Traina is the son of Diane Buchanan Wilsey and the ship magnate and art collector John Traina (1931–2011). His younger brother Todd (* 1969) is a film producer. Marisa Traina Hahn (1926–2013), his father's sister, was the wife of the former Volkswagen boss Carl Hahn . His maternal grandfather, Wiley T. Buchanan, Jr. , was Ambassador to Austria from 1975 to 1977.

Trevor Traina studied at Princeton Universities (Bachelor's degree) and Oxford (Political Science degree). He received an MBA from the Haas School of Business at Berkeley University in California . Traina began his career as a brand manager at Seagram .

As an entrepreneur, he was involved in the founding of several innovative companies, including CompareNet , which was bought by Microsoft in 1999 . He is also a curator of the Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco , the Haas School of Business, and the Princeton University Art Museum, and other institutions. He wrote columns for the online magazine Huffington Post and for the lifestyle magazine Town and Country .

He is currently the managing director of the trading company IfOnly.com , which he founded , which markets “unique experiences” and luxury items and, according to his own statements, dedicates part of the proceeds to a good cause.

Traina is married to Alexis Swanson Traina and has two children. His hobby is collecting photographs. An exhibition of his collection in summer 2012 at the Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco was controversial in the media.

Diplomatic career

Traina was nominated by President Donald Trump on January 23, 2018 for the office of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Austria . The post has been vacant since Democrat Alexa Wesner was dismissed immediately after Trump's inauguration in January 2017. The US Senate confirmed Traina's nomination on March 22, 2018. Trevor Traina officially began his work as US ambassador to Austria with the handover of his credentials to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on May 24, 2018, after he had already arrived in Vienna on May 18.
