Robert Sanderson McCormick (born July 26, 1849 in Rockbridge County , Virginia , † April 16, 1919 in Hinsdale , Illinois ) was an American diplomat .

Life

McCormick was the son of entrepreneur William Sanderson McCormick and his wife Mary Ann Grigsby McCormick. His younger brother was the entrepreneur William Grigsby McCormick . After studying at the University of Virginia , he worked as a grain broker and later joined the agricultural machinery company of his uncle Cyrus McCormick , in which his father and his uncle Leander J. McCormick also worked, and from which the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, founded in 1884, was established emerged. He was private secretary to the Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Minister in the United Kingdom , Robert Todd Lincoln , from 1889 to 1893 .

On March 7, 1901, McCormick was appointed as the successor to Addison C. Harris to the Extraordinary Envoy and Plenipotentiary Minister in Austria and handed over his letter of accreditation on April 29, 1901 . On June 26, 1902 he was promoted to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Austria-Hungary and remained in this post until December 29, 1902, when Bellamy Storer succeeded him there. In turn, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia on September 26, 1902 , and replaced the Charlemagne Tower there on January 12, 1903 after handing over his credentials . He was dismissed from this post on March 27, 1905 and was subsequently replaced by George von Lengerke Meyer . On March 8, 1905, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France , where he replaced Horace Porter on May 2, 1905 after handing over his letter of accreditation . Due to his health, he was recalled from this post on March 2, 1907.

In 1876 McCormick married Katherine Van Etta Medill McCormick, whose father Joseph Medill was the founder of the daily Chicago Tribune in 1847 and Mayor of Chicago between 1871 and 1873 . This marriage had three children, including Republican politician Joseph Medill McCormick , who represented Illinois as a member of both the House of Representatives and the Senate , and who was married to Republican politician Ruth McCormick-Simms , whose father was Mark Hanna A US Senator from Ohio who was the first woman to also represent Illinois as a member of the House of Representatives. His younger son Robert R. McCormick was the owner and editor of the Chicago Tribune founded by his grandfather . After his death he was buried in the Graceland Cemetery in Chicago .
