In 1781 George Washington with French troops under Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette defeated the British troops under Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis in the Battle of Yorktown . The British Empire granted the independence of the United States of America in the Treaty of Paris of 1783.
