Hugh Campbell Wallace (born February 10, 1863 in Lexington , Missouri , † January 1, 1931 in Washington, DC ) was an American diplomat who was ambassador to France between 1919 and 1921 .

Life

Wallace was a public debt enforcer in the Utah Territory between 1885 and 1887 and then settled in Tacoma . In the following years he acquired houses there and in Washington, DC, as well as shares in various companies such as a steamship company that carried passengers from Seattle to Alaska during the Klondike gold rush from 1896 onwards . He also owned shares in the Northern Pacific Railway , the National Bank of Commerce in Seattle and other banks, gold mines in Alaska, trams and subways. Politically, he was involved in the Democratic Party and was between 1892 and 1896 a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and 1896 delegate to the Democratic National Convention . As a delegate at the Democratic in 1912 in Baltimore , he supported the candidacy of Champ Clark , but maintained a friendly relationship with the end for the office of US President nominated Woodrow Wilson at.

Wallace was again a member of the Democratic National Committee between 1916 and 1920 and made several trips to Italy , the United Kingdom and France as President Wilson's special envoy during the First World War . On February 27, 1919, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France as the successor to William Graves Sharp , where he presented his letter of accreditation on April 22, 1919 . He took part in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 and signed the Versailles Peace Treaty for the United States . On July 5, 1921, he was recalled as ambassador, whereupon Myron T. Herrick took his place. After returning to the USA, he retired into private life.

In 1891 he married Mildred Fuller Wallace, whose father Melville W. Fuller was Chief Justice of the United States between 1888 and 1910 . This marriage resulted in the daughter Mildred Fuller Wallace, who died in 1903 at the age of twelve, and the son Thomas Bates Wallace, who died in 1907 at the age of 14. After his death, Hugh Wallace was buried in Tacoma Cemetery.
