In Paris he married the widow of Mario Joseph Sue, a doctor of Louis XVIII. After James Brown resigned as envoy, he served as chargé d'affaires in Paris in 1830. From 1848 to 1850 he advocated the construction of a Panama Canal under international control and the exchange of inexpensive editions of literature to promote understanding of cultures.
