Thomas Michael Foglietta (born December 3, 1928 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  November 13, 2004 there ) was an American politician and diplomat . Between 1981 and 1997 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives and from 1997 to 2001 he was the United States Ambassador to Italy .

Career

Thomas Foglietta attended South Catholic High School until 1945 and then St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia until 1949 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1952, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1955 and 1975 he was a councilor in Philadelphia. In 1976 he worked for the regional Federal Labor Office.

In the 1980 congressional election , Foglietta was elected as an independent candidate in the First Constituency of Pennsylvania to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Michael Myers on January 3, 1981 . After seven re-elections as a candidate for the Democratic Party , he could remain in Congress until his resignation on November 11, 1997 .

Between 1997 and 2001 Thomas Foglietta was the American ambassador in Rome . He then practiced as a lawyer. He died in Philadelphia on November 13, 2004.
