Henry P. Fletcher
Henry Prather Fletcher (born April 10, 1873 in Greencastle , Franklin County , Pennsylvania , † June 10, 1959 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an American diplomat and politician . From 1934 to 1936 he served as chairman of the Republican National Committee , the party organization of the Republicans .
After graduating from Chambersburg Academy and enrolling in the Franklin County Bar, Henry Fletcher initially worked as a lawyer. In 1898, after the outbreak of the Spanish-American War , he joined the Rough Riders , the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment commanded by Theodore Roosevelt . When his military service ended, Fletcher embarked on a career in the diplomatic service. From 1902 he was installed as a member of the delegation in Cuba , Portugal and China , before taking up the post of envoy in Chile on September 9, 1910took over; In 1914 this post was upgraded to official ambassador . Between 1916 and 1919 he then represented the USA as the successor to Henry Lane Wilson in Mexico .
Between 1921 and 1922, Henry Fletcher served as the United States Under Secretary of State in the administration of President Warren G. Harding . He was thus the Deputy Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes . After a year he left Washington again and completed other diplomatic missions as ambassador to Belgium (1922-1924) and as ambassador to Italy (1924-1929), where he succeeded Richard Washburn Child .
In 1934, Fletcher succeeded Everett Sanders as chairman of the Republican National Committee. He held this post for two years and handed it over to John Hamilton in 1936 . Although he never held a political election office, he was traded in the same year as a candidate for the office of US President; the Republican nomination ultimately went to Alf Landon . As a result, Fletcher largely withdrew into private life. He died in 1959 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
