John Fremont Hill

John Fremont Hill (born October 29, 1855 in Eliot , York County , Maine , † March 16, 1912 in Augusta , Maine) was an American politician and governor of the state of Maine from 1901 to 1905 .

Early years

John Hill attended local schools in his home country. He then studied medicine at the Maine Medical School in Brunswick . He graduated there in 1877. Hill didn't work in the medical field for long. He soon got into the publishing business. His firm, Vickery and Hill Publishing Company , soon opened offices in several major cities in the state.

Political career

Hill's political rise began in 1889 when he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives. He stayed there until 1892. Between 1893 and 1897 he was a member of the State Senate ; from 1899 to 1900 he was a member of the Governor's Advisory Council ( Executive Council ).

In 1900 Hill was elected as a Republican Party candidate for governor of Maine. He took up his new office on January 2, 1901 and, after being re-elected in 1902, was able to exercise it until January 4, 1905. During his tenure, the expansion of the road network in Maine was advanced. The rail network has also been expanded. After the end of his governorship Hill made a career in party politics. From 1910 until his death on March 16, 1912 he was chairman of the Republican National Committee . At the same time, he continued to devote himself to his publishing company. John Hill was married twice.
