Robert James "Jim" Nicholson (born February 4, 1938 in Struble , Plymouth County , Iowa ) is an American politician. He was the United States' fifth Secretary of War from 2005 to 2007 .

Life

Nicholson graduated from the renowned United States Military Academy at West Point in 1961 and served eight years in the army, including in the Vietnam War . He received several awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal . In 1991 he retired from the military with the rank of colonel .

His political career began in 1986 as a member of the Republican Party in Colorado. From 1997 to 2001 he chaired the Republican National Committee .

Between 2001 and his appointment as Minister of War Veterans, he was the sixth United States Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican). During George W. Bush's tenure as US President, he succeeded Anthony Principi on January 26, 2005 and left the cabinet at his own request on October 1, 2007 . He was succeeded by James Peake .

Prior to his political career, he was a Denver lawyer and, from 1978, a freelance real estate agent ( Nicholson Enterprises, Inc. ). Nicholson received a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Columbia University . He also graduated from the University of Denver with a law degree (1972).

Nicholson is of Roman Catholic faith . He is married to Suzanne Marie Ferrell and has three children with her.
