Robert Leon Wilkie Jr. (* 6. August 1962 in Frankfurt am Main ) is an American politician of the Republican Party , lawyer and government official. He has served as Secretary of War of the United States in President Donald Trump's cabinet since July 30, 2018 .

Life

Wilkie was born in Frankfurt and attended Salisbury Cathedral School in England and Reid Ross High School in Fayetteville , North Carolina . The son of a career officer grew up in Fort Bragg , North Carolina. He is married to Julia Wilkie, whom he has known since childhood. Wilkie received his BA from Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He received a JD degree from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans in 1988 and an LL.M. Degree in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC

Career

Wilkie began his professional career on Capitol Hill as legal advisor to Senator Jesse Helms and later served as an associate of Congressman David Funderburk . From 1997 to 2003 he was an international security advisor to Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott .

From 2003 to 2005, Wilkie was Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director of the National Security Council in the Bush administration , serving as political advisor to then National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and her successor Stephen Hadley . Wilkie developed a strategic plan for the implementation of the Sort Agreement , the Millennium Challenge Account , the Iraqi reconstruction and NATO expansion. In 2009, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates awarded him the Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal, the department's highest civilian honor.

In 2007, Wilkie, as assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs, penned a memo of guidelines limiting the say of Congress to president-appointed senior officials and civilians. Critics of the guidelines argued that they could hamper investigations into the Iraq war and that the Pentagon had no authority to set the rules.

From 2010 to 2015, Wilkie was Vice President at CH2M Hill , one of the world's largest program management companies . From 2015 to 2017 he worked for US Senator Thom Tillis .

Wilkie was named Undersecretary of State for Personnel and Preparedness at the Department of Defense by President Donald Trump on July 25, 2017. This appointment was confirmed by the Senate on November 16, 2017.

On March 28, 2018, President Trump announced via Twitter that Wilkie would serve as acting Secretary of State for Veterans Affairs until the Senate confirmed a successor. On May 18, 2018, following the withdrawn nomination of Ronny Jackson , Trump announced that he was nominating Wilkie for ministerial office. On July 23, 2018, Wilkie was confirmed as the next Minister for Veterans Affairs by the Senate by 86-9 . He was sworn in on July 30, 2018.
