James Benjamin Peake (born June 18, 1944 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a retired US Lieutenant General , Surgeon General of the United States Army and Secretary of the United States War Veterans .

biography

After attending school, he studied at the US Military Academy in West Point , where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1966 . After a postgraduate degree in medicine at Cornell University , which he graduated with a Medical Doctor (MD) in 1972 , he entered the military medical service of the United States Army . In 1988 he was also a graduate of the US Army War College in Carlisle .

During his career in the military medical service of the US Army, he was promoted to Surgeon General of the United States Army on September 22, 2000 after numerous assignments . He held this position as the successor to Ronald R. Blanck until he retired on July 8, 2004.

As a doctor, he was also a fellow of the American College of Cardiology , American College of Surgeons and Society of Thoracic Surgeons .

After retiring from active military service, he became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Project HOPE , a non-profit organization founded in 1958 and active in more than 30 countries to improve the health care system.

On December 20, 2007, he was finally appointed by US President George W. Bush as Secretary of Veterans Affairs in his cabinet , which he served until the end of Bush's presidency on January 20, 2009.
