Jesse Brown (* 27. March 1944 in Detroit ; † 15. August 2002 in Warrenton , Virginia ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , which the cabinet of US President Bill Clinton as Secretary of War Veterans belonged.

Jesse Brown, originally from Michigan , grew up in Chicago . He attended the Catholic University of America in Washington DC and Roosevelt University in Chicago before graduating from City College of Chicago .

In 1963 he joined the United States Marine Corps . In the Vietnam War he served as a member of the Marines, where he was seriously wounded in 1965 fighting near Da Nang . After returning from the war and retiring from the Marine Corps, he became a member of the Disabled American Veterans , an aid organization for disabled war veterans. Between 1989 and 1993 he served as their first African American director.

After the Democratic election in 1992 , Jesse Brown was appointed to his cabinet by Bill Clinton as Secretary of State for War Veterans. During his four-and-a-half year tenure, Brown increased benefits for female and homeless veterans, as well as for those who suffered from chronic illnesses from enemy use of chemical weapons in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars .

After retiring from government on July 3, 1997, Jesse Brown formed the consulting firm Brown and Associates . He died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , also known as Lou Gehrig Syndrome , in August 2002 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
