Surgeon General of the United States Army
The Surgeon General of the Army (TSG) is the senior physician in the United States Army . At the same time he is the commander of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD), and until October 1, 2019, he was Commanding General of the US Army Medical Command (MEDCOM). He is based in Fort Sam Houston . The Surgeon General of the Army can be compared to the Chief Medical Officer in the Bundeswehr.
The current surgeon general is Lieutenant General R. Scott Dingle , an officer in the Medical Service Corps.
AMEDD departments
The AMEDD, headed by the Surgeon General of the Army, comprises different departments, which mainly deal with the medical and psychological care of the troops. The areas subordinate to him include that
- Medical Corps (MC)
- Nurse Corps (AN)
- Dental Corps (DC)
- Veterinary Corps (VC)
- Medical Service Corps (MS)
- Medical Specialist Corps (SP)
history
The office of "Chief physician & director general" already existed in the Continental Army from 1775 . The designation Surgeon General of the Army has been found since 1813. From 1847, military ranks were assigned to the Surgeon General of the Army . At the beginning this was the rank of Brigadier General , since the 1950s this has been Lieutenant General .
