James Tilton
James Tilton (born June 1, 1745 in Kent County , Delaware Colony , † May 14, 1822 in Wilmington , Delaware ) was an American doctor and politician . In 1783 and 1784 he was a delegate for Delaware in the Continental Congress .
Career
James Tilton graduated from Nottingham Academy in Maryland. After a subsequent medical degree at the College of Philadelphia , the later University of Pennsylvania , and his approval as a doctor in 1771, he began to work in Dover in this profession. He was also a member of the local militia. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. During the Revolutionary War he was a military doctor and intermittently head of a hospital in Princeton ( New Jersey ). After the war he practiced again as a doctor in Dover. In 1783 and 1784 he represented Delaware in the Continental Congress. He later moved to Wilmington. Between 1785 and 1801 Tilton was a Government Commissioner of Loans . Between 1783 and 1793 he headed the Society of the Cincinnati in Delaware. He was also a member of the Delaware House of Representatives for several years . During the British-American War , James Tilton became the chief medical officer of the US Army as Surgeon General of the United States Army . He held this office between 1813 and 1815. He died on May 14, 1822 in Wilmington.
