Nadja Yudith West (born March 20, 1961 in Washington, DC ) is an American officer with the rank of lieutenant general . She was Surgeon General of the United States Army from December 11, 2015 to August 2019 .

Career

West was an orphan, but was adopted by a family in the District of Columbia at the age of two with two other adopted children. She graduated from high school in Maryland and then studied engineering at the United States Military Academy . In 1988 West completed a doctorate in medicine at George Washington University . Then she became active as a military doctor and took part in the First Gulf War.

On April 19, 2013, she was promoted to the rank of Major General . On December 11, 2015, West was confirmed by the United States Senate as the 44th Surgeon General and thus the highest physician in the US Army .

In July 2020, 5% of respondents voted for West in a poll conducted by The Hill of Democrat Joe Biden's preferred vice-presidential candidate .
