Marc F. Racicot (born July 24, 1948 in Thompson Falls , Montana ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was governor of the state of Montana from 1993 to 2001 .

Early years

Marc Racicot spent his childhood in Libby . Until 1970 he attended Carroll College in Helena . After studying law at the Law School of the University of Montana , he was admitted to the bar in 1973. He then joined the US Army and was stationed in Germany. There he was a military prosecutor.

Political rise

Upon returning home in 1976, he became an assistant district attorney in Missoula County . In 1977 he became Deputy Attorney General of Montana and at the same time special prosecutor for difficult cases. In 1988 he became his state's justice minister himself. In 1992 he became governor of Montana. He won 51% of the vote against Democratic candidate Dorothy Bradley. 1996 Racicot ran again for the office. Chet Blaylock , who was run as the opposing candidate, died before the election on October 23, 1996. The Democratic election campaign was continued by Judy Jacobson. Racicot won the election with 79% of the vote.

Governor of Montana and other life

Racicot's eight-year tenure began on January 4, 1993. During that time, the $ 200 million national debt was turned into a $ 22.4 million surplus. Then he was able to reduce the tax burden of the citizens. However, energy costs rose due to some restructuring in this area that the governor had initiated. During his time, some social and labor laws were also revised.

From 2002 to 2003 Racicot chaired the Republican National Committee , the party organization of the Republicans. Today he is President of the American Insurance Association (AIA), an interest group for American insurance companies. Racicot is married to Theresa Barber. The couple have five children.
