James Tufts

James Tufts (* 19th September 1829 in Charlestown , New Hampshire ; † 18th August 1886 in Niobrara , Nebraska ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . He was appointed acting governor of the Montana Territory in the summer of 1868 and was also Superintendent of Indian affairs .

Tufts was born in New Hampshire in 1829 and moved to Virginia City in what is now Montana in 1863 . First he sat as a representative of the Alder Gulch District in the Idaho Territorial Legislature ; the Montana area was then still part of the Idaho Territory . In 1864 he left the city to work in New York City , but returned in 1867 to hold the post of Secretary of the Territory of Montana from March 28, 1867 . After Green Clay Smith resigned as governor of the Montana Territory, Tufts served on a temporary basis until the new governor James Mitchell Ashley arrived in the country. Tufts was Secretary of the Territory of Montana until April 20, 1869 and then ran for a post as a delegate in the US Congress , but suffered a defeat. He died in Nebraska on August 18, 1886.
