The Montana Territory (English Montana Territory ) was a historical territory in the northwestern United States, which existed between 1864 and 1889. It originated from three previous US territories and is the precursor to what is now the state of Montana .

The areas west of the continental divide belonged to the Idaho Territory until 1864 , the areas to the east were part of the Dakota Territory and the Nebraska Territory . These eastern areas came to the United States in 1803 through the so-called Louisiana Purchase by President Thomas Jefferson . The US acquired the western territories in 1846 in the so-called Oregon Treaties . Over time, the huge area was divided into different territories. In this way, the three predecessor territories of the Montana Territory were created. On May 28, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Montana Territory Charter.

In the 25-year history of the area, the country has been ruled by a total of twelve territorial governors. The capital was initially Bannack , then from 1865 Virginia City and from 1875 until today Helena . On November 8, 1889, the area was incorporated into the United States almost unchanged as a new state.
