B. Platt Carpenter

Benjamin Platt Carpenter (born May 14, 1837 in Stanford , Dutchess County , New York , † December 24, 1921 in Chula Vista , California ) was an American lawyer and politician . He was the ninth governor of the Montana Territory from 1884 to 1885 .

Early years in New York

Carpenter attended Union College in Schenectady until 1857 . After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1858. In the following years he held several offices in New York State. He was a district attorney in Dutchess County, a district judge, a member of the New York Senate and a delegate to a constitutional convention of that state. As a member of the Republican Party , Carpenter took part in the Republican National Conventions of 1868 and 1872, at which Ulysses S. Grant was each nominated as a candidate for president. In 1881 he was chairman of his party in Montana.

Careers in Montana

In December 1884 Carpenter was named the new governor of the Montana Territory by President Chester A. Arthur . In January 1885 he arrived in the capital, Helena , where he settled permanently. Between December 16, 1884 and July 13, 1885 he held the office of governor. He stayed in Montana even after his tenure . In 1889 he was a member of the constituent assembly of that state. Carpenter was also involved in developing the new state's legislation. He then worked as a lawyer in Helena. He had been married to Esther Thorn since 1860, with whom he had three children.
