J. Hugo Aronson
John Hugo Aronson (born September 1, 1891 in Gällstad , Sweden , † February 25, 1978 in Columbia Falls , Montana ) was a Swedish -American politician and from 1953 to 1961 the 14th governor of the state of Montana.
Early years and political advancement
In the town of Ulricehamn born Hugo Aronson visited the local schools of his native Sweden. In 1911 he came to the United States, where he worked in various states. Eventually he settled in Sunburst, Montana. There he ran a shop that offered supplies for oil production.
Aronson was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1934 and 1938 he was a councilor in Cut Bank ; between 1939 and 1944 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Montana . Then he moved to the State Senate , where he stayed from 1945 to 1952. On November 4, 1952, he was elected the new governor of his state, where he prevailed with almost 51 percent of the vote against the democratic incumbent John W. Bonner .
Governor of Montana
Aronson took up his new office on January 4, 1953. After re-election in 1956, he was able to exercise it until January 4, 1961. During this time, the state's forest management was reorganized. An increase in the mineral oil tax should benefit the expansion of the road network. At that time, the governor had to successfully deal with a prison revolt. At the same time, new laws to reform the prison system were passed.
After the end of his tenure, Aronson remained politically active. In 1968 he supported Richard Nixon's election campaign . John Aronson died on February 25, 1978. He was married twice and had one child.
