Stan Stephens

Stanley Graham "Stan" Stephens (born September 16, 1929 in Calgary , Alberta ) is an American politician of Canadian origin. He was the 20th governor of the state of Montana between 1989 and 1993  .

Early years

Stan Stephens attended Western Canada High School in Calgary. Due to financial problems in his family, he had to drop out of school early. He then completed an apprenticeship at a radio station in Calgary. In 1949 he moved to Montana. There he found a job at the radio station KOJM as editor and news anchor. During the Korean War , Stephens was drafted into the US Army , where he worked for military broadcasters. After his return he worked again for the station KOJM, which he bought up in 1965 together with some partners. The broadcaster was then expanded to include a television station and Stephens rose to be president. Soon he was manager of cable television in his region.

Political rise

Stephens, a member of the Republican Party , was elected to the Montana Senate in 1968 . He was a member of this from 1969 to 1973 and again from 1975 to 1986. During this time he held all leading positions in this chamber. In 1988, he was elected governor of Montana with 51.9 percent of the vote against former Democratic incumbent Thomas Lee Judge . On January 2, 1989, Stephens was inducted into his new office. During his tenure, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state of Montana fell; otherwise there were no special incidents. For health reasons, Stephens decided not to run again in 1992. His term of office thus ended on January 4, 1993. After that, he retired into private life.

Stan Stephens is married to Ann Hanson, with whom he has two children. His wife died in October 2017 at the age of 90.
