Ronna Romney McDaniel (born March 20, 1973 in Austin , Texas ) is an American politician and chairwoman of the Republican National Committee , the party organization of the Republicans, since January 19, 2017 .

Life

Ronna Romney, her maiden name, is the daughter of Scott and Ronna Romney. Her mother was the losing Republican Party candidate for the United States Senate in Michigan in the 1996 election . Her father is the brother of Mitt Romney , the also failed Republican presidential candidate of 2012. Her grandfather George W. Romney was, among other things, Secretary of State for Construction of the United States .

She worked as a production director and managing director in the media industry before becoming politically active in 2012 when she chaired Women for Mitt during her uncle Mitt's presidential campaign . From 2014 she was a representative of Michigan on the Republican National Committee. She gave up this role when she was elected chairman of the Republican Party of Michigan in February 2015. She stated the goal that in the upcoming 2016 presidential election, for the first time since 1988, the electoral vote of the state should fall back to the Republicans.

After this was successful and Donald Trump had won the presidential election against Hillary Clinton , he spoke out in favor of McDaniel as the new RNC chairman.
