Libby is a city in Lincoln County in the US state of Montana and the seat of the county seat .
According to the 2000 census, 2626 inhabitants live in the city, which has an area of 3.3 km².
The area was contaminated with asbestos due to the mining of vermiculite by WR Grace and Company near the city area. Together with the harmless vermiculite, tremolite , the most harmful form of asbestos, was extracted from the mountain . After the mine was closed in 1990, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave the all-clear for the time being that no asbestos residues had been measured. After research by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and a follow-up by the EPA, Libby finally named Libby the worst toxic community in 1999. It took $ 120 million to eliminate this. 700 houses have been renovated, and another 700 are on the list. If WR Grace and Company enforces a planned bankruptcy declaration, the restructuring costs will ultimately have to be borne by the public purse.
