Lewis O. Barrows

Lewis Orin Barrows (born June 7, 1893 in Newport , Maine , † January 30, 1967 in Pittsfield , Maine) was an American politician and governor of the state of Maine from 1937 to 1941 .

Early years and political advancement

After elementary school, Barrows attended the University of Maine . He was then Newport City Chamberlain for twelve years. As a member of the Republican Party in 1926, he sat on its state board for Maine. Between 1927 and 1933 he was a member of the governor's advisory board; from 1935 to 1936 he was Secretary of State in that state.

Governor of Maine

In 1936, Lewis Barrows was elected as his party's candidate for new governor. He took office on January 6, 1937 and, after being re-elected in 1938, was able to exercise it until January 1, 1941. During this time, he was able to secure federal grants to build new bridges, highways and public buildings. He also managed to reduce the national debt and set up a balanced budget. School policy was promoted through a higher budget and the pension system improved. The powers of the commission to further develop Maine have also been expanded.

After his term in office, Barrows withdrew from politics. In the years that followed, he worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company , a Boston- based insurance company. Ex-Governor Barrows died on January 30, 1967. He was married to Pauline Henderson, with whom he had one child.
